In a significant milestone that indicates YouTube's deepening commitment to the Indian market, the global video-sharing platform has appointed Gunjan Soni as the Country Managing Director for India. This is an important appointment at a critical time when YouTube is evolving from not just a video entertainment platform but also becoming a central place for education, commerce, creator innovation, and digital entrepreneurship. By appointing Soni, YouTube continues its ambition to be a leader and architect in the context of India's digital content ecosystem.
A Strategic Appointment in a Pivotal Market:
India has one of the biggest user bases for YouTube in the world, with hundreds of millions of monthly active users engaging across the full range of content types—educational teacher tutorials, cooking videos, entertainment, news, and spiritual content. Gunjan Soni's appointment comes during a somewhat transitional time in which Ishan Chatterjee exited the company in late 2024. YouTube's decision to appoint someone with experience in both digital commerce and content to head their most strategically important market outside the United States.
With a unique combination of experience leading e-commerce, media, technology, and marketing organizations, Gunjan is well qualified to lead YouTube into its next growth phase in India. As YouTube continues to respond to the changing nature of Indian consumers, the leadership of Soni is expected to bring fresh ways of thinking to areas such as creator monetization, regional content strategy, and video with commerce.

Gunjan Soni: The Professional Journey of a Trailblazer
Gunjan Soni's professional journey demonstrates remarkable agility across industries - and transformation. Gunjan began her career at McKinsey & Company, ultimately becoming a Partner. In that role, she collaborated with top consumer-facing businesses to evaluate their marketplace and establish strategic roadmaps for future digital growth. This not only developed a data-oriented foundation for her decision-making but honed her understanding of consumer behavior, both of which have become integral to her leadership style.
Gunjan departed McKinsey to take on the role of Chief Marketing Officer at Myntra (henceforth known as Myntra), one of the leading e-commerce fashion players in India. During her time at Myntra, Gunjan witnessed enormous growth in brand awareness and brand equity, and consumer acquisition. Gunjan then moved to Star India as an Executive Vice President, where she worked closely with digital and content teams to develop a footprint around content in media formats.
However, it was her role as Group CEO at ZALORA, the leading fashion/lifestyle e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia, that built her credentials as a leader and catalyst for digital transformation. At ZALORA, Gunjan oversaw platform innovation, customer personalization strategy, customer loyalty, and category expansion. She drove exceptional value through customer experience and revenue growth across numerous geographical locations. Gunjan is also currently an independent board member at CBRE, a Fortune 500 global real estate services firm - further demonstrating her breadth as a business leader.
Why Gunjan Soni’s Appointment Matters:
Gunjan's appointment is not solely filling an empty seat in the YouTube Company structure. It is a carefully planned appointment aligned with YouTube's future vision for India. YouTube is already way beyond a video sharing platform (and will continue to be as we get into digital commerce, creator economy, and even traditional media consumption in India).
YouTube is having a field day right now, considering the new wave of formats like YouTube Shorts, Connected TV experiences, live-streaming (and especially, live-streaming e-commerce) that are all exploding in India! It is not surprising to see these new ways of engaging with even bigger integrated experiences between content and commerce in an increasingly influencer marketing and social selling world. All the while, it is a perfect match with Gunjan's former work in content innovation in product media and e-commerce!
Furthermore, YouTube’s ecosystem already has its roots in India’s creator economy. There are thousands of Indian creators—whether they live in tier-1, tier-2, or tier-3 cities—earning a living on the platform. Improving extension of monetization opportunities for this diverse set of creators has become a priority for YouTube—and Soni’s background in business models, market segmentation, and user engagement will help unlock it.
Reinventing YouTube India’s Strategy:
Gunjan Soni brings a unique combination of consumer empathy and technology vision. In her past roles she has shown a strong appreciation and understanding for what it means to provide local relevance at scale. India is not a homogenous market, but a unique mosaic of language, culture, and digital consumption. YouTube's ability to success in India will be contingent on its ability to fulfill the hyper-local aspects of the user's needs while still delivering a world-class experience.
We expect to see YouTube India broaden its support of regional language content, deepen its partnerships with local creators and advertisers, and possibly even introduce new forms of monetization features for creators—like shoppable videos or loyalty rewards for subscribers or deeper e-commerce integration.
Soni's appointment is also in alignment with this global movement by YouTube to support its creators in new and diverse ways beyond just ad revenue. YouTube has created tools like Super Chat, Channel Memberships, and YT shopping to help promote revenue diversity for creators. If Soni is able to leverage what seems to be a strong command of e-commerce, India could become an example for YT's marketplace innovations.
Strengthening the Creator Economy:
A primary focus for YouTube India moving forward will be to empower its existing creator community. India has a growing list of content creators, many of whom are turning their YouTube channels into full-time job roles. Whether that's a tech reviewer in Bengaluru, a spoken word poet from Lucknow or a food vlogger in Coimbatore, YouTube is changing lives by providing financial independence through digital content.
Gunjan Soni is uniquely qualified to enhance this ecosystem. Her background speaks to, and shows a commitment to, innovation and inclusivity. While at ZALORA, she created initiatives that personalized customer experiences and supported small brands. At YouTube she will likely put into place initiatives that will help creators, at all levels of their journey, including educational resources, content strategy workshops, community grants, and regionally focused creator tools.
Her own post on LinkedIn announced her enthusiasm for the multi-generational nature of the platform and that people 7 - 70 in her own family use YouTube. She recognized that this wide relevance across demographics, geographies and interests is a big opportunity.
A Forward-Looking Vision: Commerce, CTV, and AI:
There are new directions expected with YouTube India under Gunjan Soni's leadership. In addition to CTV, we will likely see a rise in video commerce. This video commerce feature means shoppable videos - where users purchase products directly from a Youtube video. Given her knowledge of the customer journey in e-commerce, India may soon see pilot programs or partnerships happening to help users completing the shopping journey in Youtube’s interface.
Another area that is going to be important is CTV. Smart TVs are kicking in and the internet is becoming more affordable, and more and more Indian users are consuming youtube content on these bigger screens. Given Gunjan's broadcast media history, she is set up well to seize this moment and create content strategies for living-room viewing.
Finally, we can expect further developments of artificial intelligence for recommendation systems, moderation and creator support mechanisms. Gunjan's data orientation and former work with AI-powered personalisation tools will serve her well while YouTube builds more intelligent systems for content discovery and user safety.
Challenges Ahead:
While the opportunities are promising, Soni will also face some major challenges. India’s regulatory landscape—which is getting more complicated for tech companies—poses a host of strategic problems to navigate diplomatically. Data privacy issues, content moderation, and advertising transparency, among others, will continue to evolve.
In addition, Soni will need to continue to find ways to monetize creators equitably across audience size, region, and language community. This will require systemic improvements to how the platform drives monetization for its creators, as well as improving how content is discovered on the platform.
YouTube must also address the reported digital divide, as millions of Indians still face issues with access to connectivity or digital literacy. Soni's leadership will be further tested by trying to ensure YouTube is inclusive and accessible for all.
A Cultural and Economic Force:
YouTube is not only a platform for content but is also a cultural force and a contributor to digital employment in India. Whether it's helping students to prepare for competitive exams, showing regional artisans, or providing a space for social commentary, YouTube's impact goes beyond entertainment.
With Gunjan Soni leading its operations in India, YouTube is set to further leverage the economy by allowing creators to be entrepreneurs, help small businesses monetize through video commerce, and help brands engage with desired audiences across urban and rural markets.
Soni's leadership will also play a key role in how YouTube will integrate with the larger digital narrative across India, by increasing digital literacy, empowering women creators, and developing scalable pathways for youth entrepreneurship through content creation.
Conclusion: A Bold New Chapter for YouTube India
Gunjan Soni’s new role as Country Managing Director of YouTube India is a turning point—not just for YouTube, but for India’s digital content ecosystem as a whole. She brings extensive cross-industry leadership experience, a relentless focus on customer-centric innovation, and a multitude of experiences throughout India’s digital landscape as a leader who is well-positioned for this opportunity.
Although YouTube is growing in devices, languages, and commercial models, Soni's leadership is expected to drive an evolution for the company where creators are empowered, content is inclusive, and opportunities are democratized. India is not just a market for YouTube; India is the future. And with Gunjan Soni leading the charge, the future is great.
